People started throwing things at police line and CMPD launched tear gas before instructing people to leave immediately or be arrested. Police said eight arrests have been made in connection with this incident, and two guns were seized. The protest was deemed unlawful because it took place on private property and impacted traffic, according to police. One post illustrated how the Eritrean cultural event was being protested by a rival group, but more information was not immediately available. "The people attending the event that was being protested have ended their event and left the scene. Protesters remain on scene and still have not dispersed," CMPD wrote at the time.

Racial violence is part of the American fabric

What appeared to be a peaceful night of protests against the Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, turned unruly late Sunday, reports the CBS affiliate there, WBTV. It was the third straight night of demonstrations against the GOP gathering, which officially kicks off Monday. Scott’s death set off days of protests and riots in Charlotte. Police say when a crowd gathered in front of the Omni Hotel on Sept. 21, 2016, Carr was fatally wounded. Video posted to social media appeared to show over a dozen police cruisers and two officers running at the scene. Investigators were trying to determine what happened inside the residence.

No arrests or injuries were reported in Charlotte Wednesday night as a result of the protests, according to CMPD. WCNC Charlotte reporter Briana Harper observed those peaceful protesters moving through the streets of uptown Charlotte shortly after 9 p.m. In 2019, a Mecklenburg County jury found Borum guilty of second-degree murder in the deadly shooting of Carr, who died when demonstrators took to the streets to protest the officer-involved killing of Keith Lamont Scott.

However, groups such as the local Nation of Islam chapter called for the black community to boycott white-owned businesses. Much of the anger surrounding the shooting was also based on a belief, largely advanced by a few bystanders, that the department had covered up the fact that Scott’s shooting was actually at the hands of a white officer. Dozens of people, including at least 26 police officers, were injured during unrest surrounding an Eritrean cultural festival in the southwestern German city of Stuttgart in September 2023. A fight the same month between Eritrean government supporters and opponents in Tel Aviv led to violent street confrontations among African asylum-seekers and migrants. In the St. Louis case, there was not a single allegation that any of the 123 people kettled and arrested as they protested the acquittal of an officer who had killed a Black man were directly involved in any property damage or violence, Khazaeli said.

In the aftermath, Officer Vinson was indicted, tried, and found not guilty in the shooting death of Lamont Scott. His acquittal prompted additional protests by local Black Lives Matter activists but these protests remained peaceful. The authorities shut down the city’s Shannon Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Monday afternoon after gunfire erupted in order to more easily move victims to hospitals, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media. In the historic first criminal trial of an ex-president, Donald Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a violation of campaign finance law. But despite such a major event, there are no video cameras allowed in the courtroom, and no still photos save for those typically taken of the defense table in a minute-long photo opportunity.

Killing of Keith Lamont Scott

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In a downtown park, grass grows over the spot where there once stood a massive bronze statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, astride his horse Traveller. I thought that the statement put out, the mother's statement, I thought was a beautiful statement. And really, under the kind of stress that she's under, and the heartache she's under, I thought putting out that statement to me was really something I won't forget. And there are others like him out there – we as a society have to do a better job of figuring out how to reach them.

The officers left the area to retrieve equipment and don "marked duty vests" that would identify them as police officers. When they returned, they identified themselves as police officers and "gave clear, loud and repeated verbal commands to drop the gun". A uniformed officer arrived to assist and tried to break Scott's front passenger window with a baton.

New details emerge after 4 law enforcement officers killed in shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina

"There's indication that the suspect saw them coming to the house prior to them getting to the front door," Jennings said during a news conference Tuesday. As the protest escalated, a group of protesters threw rocks at firefighters who were responding to an emergency call uptown. Officers had one man on the ground in handcuffs as protesters chanted, “no justice, no peace."

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, "The Justice Department is heartbroken by the deaths of three of our own law enforcement colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones as they grieve this unfathomable loss." Police said at least 30 protesters were arrested over the last few hours of the demonstrations and into the morning hours. The charges ranged from assault to illegal gun possession to possession of a dangerous weapon at a demonstration.

The shooting prompted investigations by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and the U.S. As is customary for the department, Vinson was placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. In November 2016, county prosecutors decided not to charge Vinson, concluding that the shooting was justified. Importantly, we found that Charlotte has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation according to our analysis of FBI crime data. This is compared to communities of all sizes, from the smallest to the largest.

New York City police arrived at Columbia University Tuesday night in an armored vehicle used a mechanical ramp to enter and clear an occupied academic building through a window, as hundreds of protesters below looked on or were arrested by police on the ground. April 30 (UPI) -- A day after a shooting left four law-enforcement officers dead in North Carolina, authorities on Tuesday identified the suspected gunman, saying he had a lengthy criminal record. No matter how worldly one’s travels, I can assure you that everyone at the Ritz Uptown last night had at least one moment of panic for the safety of themselves or their families. Vinroy Reid, who owns a business near the scene, told WCNC Charlotte the scene involved two groups of people. The group hosting the event was apparently supportive of the current Eritrean government, while the protesters were opposed.

And in Portland, Oregon, in 2017, and then again earlier this year, police trapped protesters in a kettle, only allowing them to leave after they agreed to be photographed and show their IDs. The shooting revived scrutiny of a police department that drew national attention about three years ago when a white officer was quickly charged with voluntary manslaughter after he killed Jonathan Ferrell, an unarmed black man. Protesters clashed with police officers in riot gear and blocked a stretch of Interstate 85. Video from local television early Wednesday showed some demonstrators looting trucks that had been stopped on the highway and setting fire to the cargo.

Fox News Digital reached out to the department Sunday seeking the identities and more information about those eight arrested. CMPD officers physically detain a protester during a demonstration against police brutality in Charlotte, N.C., on June 2, 2020. Others in law enforcement questioned the logic of a practice that often results in the opposite effect of its stated purpose.

At one point, a person attempted to throw an object at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer. Sunday started with demonstrators marching in large crowds at various locations in uptown Charlotte Sunday in response to the death of George Floyd. The North Carolina unrest happened the same day rioting broke out between two rival groups of Eritreans in the Netherlands on Saturday night. Police said, during this time, a female protester struck an officer, and a firearm was seized from her person.

Community activists are pressing the city on equity issues, including in housing and public schools. "To see that people still interact with this tells me that the events of the day still matter," says Bro. "One of the things about that weekend of 2017 was it revealed, it re-energized, it revived in many people's minds the reality that anti-democratic forces are ascendant in this country," he says. "Hate is quite brazen to show its face proudly, confidently with encouragement from elected officials." But the rally was met with resistance from hundreds of residents who rejected racism, chanting "Nazi scum off our streets." On the night of Aug. 11, 2017, Neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen and other white supremacists marched through the University of Virginia campus bearing torches and terrorizing students with chants of "Blood and soil" and "Jews will not replace us."
